March 19, 2020 Update

Production has halted on nearly all tv shows and movies at this point. Soon I will get news on which shows will get reduced seasons and which will get delayed.

In the meantime, here is my first Development Hell list in several months.

Wellsville (NBC) - Inspired by H.G. Wells. "Centered on Ellie, a young scientist lured to a secluded island under the pretense of curing her terminally sick mother. While there she discovers there is more to this island and its inhabitants than it seems."
Bone White (Amazon) - "After a telepathic distress call from his estranged twin brother jolts him out of his humdrum existence, an agoraphobic professor journeys deep into the Alaskan wilderness to uncover a vast supernatural mystery with the help of an intrepid police investigator."
Near Death (CBS) - "Following a horrible accident, a young woman’s near-death experience leads to inexplicable visions that prove surprisingly useful in helping her detective father solve crimes, and may also reveal dark secrets that threaten to permanently fracture their family."
Zorro (NBC) - "A modern-day retelling of the Zorro mythology that follows Z, a female descendant of the warrior bloodline who will go to great lengths to protect the defenseless in her community."
The Pioneer (NBC) - "Centers on Alice Watson. Still struggling with the aftermath of a tragic accident that killed her son, Alice and her headstrong daughter Joanna will have to overcome their emotional trauma when they find themselves unexpectedly pivotal in the survival of their family, and their colony, after the arrival on their new planet does not go according to plan."
Midnighters (CW) - Based on the book series by Scott Westerfeld. "Midnighters, on their 29th birthday, an estranged brother and sister discover they’re Midnighters, a chosen few born at the stroke of midnight, with access to a magical 25th hour each day that their kind can use to dramatic, comedic and poignant advantage. Ultimately, they learn their destiny is to protect the world from an ancient evil that has been trapped inside the 25th hour for centuries and is about to break free."
Borne (AMC) - Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s popular Borne universe novels. "Tells the story of Rachel who, surviving as a scavenger in a ruined city of the future destroyed by an evil company, discovers a mysterious creature she longs to keep despite her companion’s warnings and her own reservations. “Am I a person?” Borne asked me. “Yes, you are a person,” I told him. “But like a person, you can be a weapon, too.”"
Aladdin (Disney+) - "An Aladdin offshoot centered on Prince Anders, the scene-stealing character played by Billy Magnussen in the live-action film"
Snow Crash (HBO Max) - Based on Neal Stephenson’s cyberpunk novel. "Revolves around Hiro Protagonist, who in reality delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo’s CosoNostra Pizza Inc., but in the Metaverse he’s a warrior prince. Plunging headlong into the enigma of a new computer virus that’s striking down hackers everywhere, he races along the neon-lit streets on a search-and-destroy mission for the shadowy virtual villain threatening to bring about infocalypse."
Carrie (FX) - The classic Stephen King book as a mini series.

I will do a couple more lists over the next couple weeks.

March 14, 2020 Update

Due to COVID19, filming on most shows is being delayed and some seasons will be cut short. Many of the full season shows have not yet filmed their final episodes, so big season finales may or may not happen. For example, Supernatural's series finale has not yet been filmed and will likely be delayed until later in the year or possibly even next year. Most streaming shows expected in the next month have finished filming and are getting their special effects and such done now. I expect some Spring shows and most Summer/Fall shows to be delayed/shortened. Animated shows will probably fare better than live action shows.

A lot of pilots are being filmed right now. I expect the networks to pick up fewer shows than normal.

We have been spoiled the last 10 years or so with a lot of Summer shows. This year, I expect Summer tv to return to what it used to be, mostly reruns. I do not know the status of the HBO Max shows, they may have to delay the launch. That would be unfortunate, since this is the perfect time to pick up a lot of subscribers. This will be a good time to catch up on shows we haven't gotten around to watching yet.

I expect this list to get much longer over the next week. Outside of animated shows, I expect almost all shows to halt production in the next week or so. I doubt I will maintain a list of halted shows, though I will certainly give updates on which shows will get finales and such, as I find out.

I have about 30 development hell shows I need to put in updates. I will try to work on that over the next couple weeks.

November 28, 2019 Update

Doing detailed update write-ups is keeping me from doing a lot of quick and easy updates, so I am going to ease off of that.
Today I have updated a lot of dates.
The InBetween was officially canceled.
Pennyworth was officially renewed.
Another Life was officially renewed.
Stargirl will air on DC Universe first, then 1 day later will air on CW.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 canceled on Netflix, might pop up with a new season elsewhere someday.
A bunch of shows airing right now have been renewed and I have added "(r)" for those shows.

I have a few new shows to add to the list and about a dozen development hell shows, but not today.

October 28, 2019 Update

Lots more updates have piled up for the last couple weeks, let's get to it.

The Terror season finish, will probably return in 2020 for another season.

Better Than Us will probably return for another season in 2020.

Carnival Row will return for another season in 2020.

The Dark Crystal will probably return for another season in 2020.

The A List season is available for binging.

Arrow final season has begun, 10 episodes.

Impulse season is available for binging.

Watchmen season has begun.

Castle Rock season has begun, will run until December 11.

Daybreak season is available for binging.

Emergence season has begun, and added to the list.

Raising Dion season available for binging, and added to the list.

Living with Yourself season is available for binging, and added to the list.

Good Witch Halloween special has aired, will return for the next season in 2020.

The Outsider added, premieres January 12. "Based on Stephen King's bestselling novel of the same name, the drama series explores the investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy and the mysterious force surrounding the case."

Mortel dated for November 21.

The Witcher will probably start in December.

MST3K pushed to Fall 2020 at the earliest.

Walking Dead spinoff dated for Spring.

Batwoman has been picked up for the rest of the full season of 22 episodes.

Paranormal is now going into production, so I am dating for "Spring?"

neXt has been pushed to Spring.

Helstrom dated for 2020.

Doctor Who will return some time in 2020, no Christmas/New Years special.

Cloak and Dagger canceled.

Mob Psycho 100 I am pushing to canceled.

Evil renewed.

For All Mankind renewed.

All other shows labeled as "Fall" have been pushed to Winter.

Today's Development Hell

DMZ (HBO) - DC (future) civil war comic. "Chronicles the harrowing journey of a fierce female medic who saves lives while desperately searching for her lost son. But as she contends with the gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords that control this lawless no man’s land, she becomes the unlikely source of what everyone here has lost: hope."

Repeat (CBS) - Based on a Japanese time travel series. "The opportunity to travel back 10 months to relive their pasts seems like an incredible gift to a group of strangers, giving them the chance to right wrongs, undo mistakes, and set their lives on a better path, but their new choices have unforeseen results as they unravel a larger conspiracy with deadly consequences."

The Vault (NBC) - Post-apocalyptic. "When a cataclysmic event seemingly wipes out the planet, the survival of humanity rests upon Annie, a geobiologist who has been setting up a state-of-the-art facility in the Arctic known as the Vault. It houses a dozen experts in their respective fields all with specific skill sets that would be essential in rebuilding civilization."

The Shelley Society (HBO Max) - "A mash-up of gothic horror and teen romance featuring young Mary Shelley."

The Brides (HBO Max) - "A reimagining of the Brides of Dracula."

Dante's Inferno (Freeform) - "Grace Dante, who thought her life sucked. Between parenting her drug addict mother and her troubled brother, our 20-something hero has had to give up all her dreams. Then one day everything changes and her dreams start magically coming true, school, career, love… but the godfather of all this good fortune is the Devil himself. And to outwit him, she’ll have to journey through Dante’s Inferno."

Superman & Lois (CW) - "Will follow the world’s most famous Super Hero and comic books’ most famous journalist as they deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society." Super hero sitcom?

The 100 prequel (CW) - Backdoor pilot, depends on how well received the episode will be in season 7 of The 100. "It starts with the end of the world, a nuclear apocalypse that wipes out most of the human population on Earth, and follows a band of survivors on the ground as they learn to cope in a dangerous world while fighting to create a new and better society from the ashes of what came before."
